Between Joan Rivers, Bruce Jenner, and the Playboy Mansion, the United States has certainly earned a reputation for being, shall we say, a little less than au naturel when it comes to matters of beauty. Indeed, the American Society of Plastic Surgeons claims that 14.6 million cosmetic plastic surgery procedures were performed in the U.S. in 2012, up five percent from the previous year. What can we say? We're vain.

But, we're hardly the worst offenders. According to data from the International Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery and Goldman Sachs, it's Italy, Greece, and South Korea who are the biggest fans of cosmetic procedures. Here we thought it was all that olive oil that made everyone look so damn good.

In 2011, the three countries had the highest percentages of aesthetic procedures per 1,000 people, though Brazil, Columbia, and (hey there) the U.S. aren't far behind. If it's natural beauty you're after, the map shows that much of Africa, Scandinavia, and Greenland are fairly surgery-free.

Well, well, well. We can hardly toot our own horn, but it's a little comforting to know that the Donatella Versaces of the world have us beat. (Business Insider)

Donating Your Clothing May Do More Harm Than Good - Fashion Labels

It's the way many fashionphiles come to love brands like Prada or Versace in more intimate ways, beyond just seeing them in magazines. Those occasional rare finds, in addition to the many, many awesome '90s revival pieces we've found buried in the racks at Salvation Army, are a source of pride (not to mention an adrenaline rush) for many of us. Plus, it's an easy way to turn your shamefully excessive spending habit into something that actually does some good for the world.

But, as Tansy Hoskins points out in this fascinating op-ed for Business of Fashion, it might not be quite as rosy as it sounds especially when it comes to the donated, sold in bulk, and shipped at low cost distribution of Westerners' clothing to markets in areas like sub-Saharan Africa. These goods can actually make a considerable profit, even though many are donated. Then, there's the issue that the massive influx of clothing into these areas suppresses the growth of local textile markets.

It's a further cost of the fast-fashion cycle. Clothes are purchased without a whim, donated practically unworn, and forgotten about with the vague sentiment that you've done a good deed. And, while providing clothing to those in need is not a bad thing in and of itself, the point here is that it's a complex process with more consequences than those donating might realize. It's not unlike the same debate behind whether or not we should be pouring aid money into foreign countries or working to stabilize and promote prosperity in other, more substantial ways. In short, there's a lot to be said for either side of the argument. What do you think? (Business of Fashion)

Jauretsi Saizarbitoria, Curator, The Inside Source at eBay, DJ, Radio Host, Filmmaker, and Writer

We’ve known Jauretsi Saizarbitoria since we were a wee lil’ website and loved her all along the way. When we first met, she was the hostess behind all of Paper magazine's best bashes. Then we watched as she hopped from Details to an editorial perch at Jane to Google, Starworks, Nowness, and a clutch of other coveted places. All the while she was working on other intriguing projects, including a documentary on Cuban music. As we catch up with her now, the South Beach native is happily ensconced in her new life, simultaneously acting as a curator of eBay's Inside Source site; hosting her own Cuban-inflected Internet radio show; and running Sugar Barons, her bloggy platform for discussing tech, arts, and culture. It's remarkable she had any time to talk with us at all, but here she is chatting about her complicated history, multitasking, and flipping through eBay's virtual closet.

Tell us a bit about your career path — we sometimes get lost in all the details.

“I was always a little diffuse in my career goals. I've let my passions guide me. I learned in later years that that’s an asset not a liability. Yeah, I threw parties in the mid ‘90s for Paper magazine, then Details back when it had the Soho loft (oh, those rooftop days!). By the time I made it to Jane magazine, I was its entertainment editor, booking celebrity covers. Jane Pratt was an awesome partner in crime and really knew how to put people together. After 10 years in print, I left the business to shoot a documentary in Cuba and reemerged in New York two years later to reinvent myself as a digital girl.”

And by that you mean a digital specialist and curator for The Inside Source at eBay. What's that like?

“I spend all day sifting through its virtual closet — infinite amounts of goods from fashion to tech — pulling out inspirational items for our readers. I also get to travel around the world to eBay offices, championing the brand through events and DJing. Next up is eBay China, which just opened!”

But you're also still doing work for other clients, hosting a radio show, and more? How do you keep that all balanced?

“Discipline. Planning your day wisely is key. I love making lists and crossing things off. Also, I thrive on multitasking. In the past 20 years, I've worked in many different industries from event planning to magazine editing to DJing to curating. Usually one task feeds the other. With the Internet generation, for some bizarre reason, it's finally accepted to master multiple skill sets without being apologetic.”

Now, how did you first get into DJing and music?

“My grandfather owned a famous restaurant in prerevolution Havana called Centro Vasco in the ‘40s and ‘50s. My father brought the restaurant to Miami in the ‘60s with a supper club featuring legends like Celia Cruz and Cachao performing. Everyone from Versace to Madonna partied there. My mom was always the host, so they sort of rolled their eyes with a knowing smile when I made it to New York to throw parties and DJ. It's also no surprise I'm hosting a radio show with Cuban Jazz on radiolily.com, especially since I still play some of my mom’s old vinyl.”

As an experienced party planner, tell us all about the most epic party you’ve been to, ever.

“I'd say the most joyous party I've been to recently was the April 2012 opening-night bash for the biennial in Havana, Cuba. Artists Jose Parla and JR had arrived to paint murals for their project ‘Wrinkles of the City.' It was the first time my young Cuban friends mixed with some of my New York posse. Everyone danced with abandon to a DJ set by Gilles Peterson. After that, our big group walked along the Malecón to the Plaza de Armas with a bottle of Havana rum as we laughed and danced to the sunrise…a magical night.”

Don’t Mess With Bar Paly: Closed Set With Julie Bensman - Fashion News

Our editor-at-large catches up with the Israeli actress to get her take on film, fashion and paintballing.

Bar Paly isn’t just a pretty face (although she’s clearly got that going on). The co-star of America’s top box office film at the moment, Pain and Gain, has just hit Hollywood with a megadose of talent, style and a mean paintball game. Next up? She stars in Non-Stop, a suspense flick aboard an international flight in which Paly plays a young European model traveling with her much-older married lover. Ooh la la.

I caught up with the Israeli actress (and social media powerhouse – check out her Instagram count!) to get her take on film, fashion and — dog food jellybeans?

Julie Bensman: Congrats on the success of Pain and Gain! Did you know it would be such a hit while making it?

Bar Paly: Thank you! It was a dream to work with such an A-list cast who were all equally passionate about the project. Being directed by Michael Bay, the mad genius behind it all, was just incredible. He really inspired everyone to share in his vision, and created such a wonderfully dark comic tone for the film. Seeing it take number one was definitely gratifying. I'm really overwhelmed with the love and the support from the fans. This being my first big film, it's all pretty exciting and crazy!

JB: And you already have another one lined up, yes?

BP:  Yes, Non-Stop! What drew me to the project was the opportunity to work with all those talented people [Liam Neeson, Julianne Moore] whose movies I really admire. The bonus was they all turned out to be such cool people — we had lots of laughs on set. Most of the movie takes place on a plane, so we had to find ways to entertain each other on set — three months in a plane will drive you nuts! So the cast and crew would prank each other. I found these really gross jellybeans that look normal but have awful tastes like "rotten egg" or "dog food" and I got the whole set with those.

JB: When not on set, how do you spend your free time?

BP: When I'm not working, I try to get in the basics, like walking my dogs, grocery shopping and going to the gym. If I can find more time off than that, I love to play games, especially paintball. In my day-to-day life, I'm a very girly-girl, but when I go paintballing, I get to get down and dirty with the boys. Did I mention I'm ultra competitive?!

JB: How would you describe your sense of style?

BP: I guess I would say my style is very feminine chic. I like all things womanly: dresses, skirts, blouses and heels. I believe that with a great pair of heels, a girl is unstoppable (ok, unless she has to run!). I also love to rock a great pantsuit.

JB: Who are some of your favorite designers?

BP: I love so many! Not a fair question...Some of my favorites are Dolce and Gabbana, Versace, Ferragamo, Tom Ford, Giorgio Armani, Zuhair Murad, Valentin Yudashkin, Elie Saab and, well, if I keep going, we will be here all day!

JB: And which item will you never leave home without?

BP: Band-Aids. Remember my love for high heels? It comes with a price.
